Hello and welcome to the official JHM Chiropractic, LLC
Blog, The Spinal Column.
My name is Joe Mehring, and I am the owner and a treating chiropractor at JHM Chiropractic, LLC. Currently JHM Chiropractic has two locations in Wisconsin; one location is in the heart of downtown Milwaukee and the other is in Germantown.
People often ask me, “Dr. Joe why did you become a
chiropractor?”
Like many chiropractors, the answer to this question resides
in the simple fact that chiropractic care changed my life. During my teenage years, I began to suffer
from frequent and debilitating migraine headaches. Like many of you who face or have faced this
same problem, I went to my medical doctor, and was given a prescription for
medication. The medication did a great
job of masking the symptoms when they arose, however the medication was not
doing anything to prevent or treat the underlying cause of the migraine
headaches.
While at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (UW-O) I was
advised to see a chiropractor. Not
knowing anything about chiropractic care at the time, I instantly responded, “I
don’t need my bones cracked!” A few
weeks later, I finally convinced myself to go see this “doctor.” He explained to me that the top two bones of
my spine were rotated in opposite directions which caused tension on my brain stem
and my spinal nerves. He called these
rotations “subluxations.”
Desperate, however not all that optimistic, I decided to start receiving chiropractic care on a regular basis. Little did I know at that time things would never be the same. My life improved significantly, not only from a health prospective but from a career prospective as well. Slowly, but surely, my migraine headaches decreased in frequency and duration. The occurrence of my migraines went from three per week, to two per week, to one per week as I continued seeing my chiropractor regularly. After a while, experiencing a headache of any kind was rare. I stopped taking the migraine medication that was prescribed for me about four weeks after my first chiropractor visit and never looked back. As a whole, I felt completely different. I had no pain or headaches, I was sleeping better, I could concentrate better and, in general, I did not get sick nearly as often as the people around me!
It was at this point that I realized there really is
something to this chiropractic care. After one of my treatments, I sat down with my chiropractor and asked
him to explain this “sublimation” thing to me in detail. He looked at me, rather confused, and then
he finally understood what I was trying to ask. He responded, “Oh! You mean you want me to explain a subluxation!” As I will explain in the next edition of this
blog, he explained to me in detail exactly what a subluxation is, how they are
created and, when present, the complications they can cause. I was astonished by this information, yet at
the same time I was very frustrated.
Between the ages of 16 and 22 I had been seeing a medical
doctor on a fairly regular basis for my migraines. Six years of medication simply covered up a
symptom and did not address the underlying problem. Not once did my medical doctor advise that I
should see a chiropractor, despite the fact that research suggests 70-80%
of all headaches stem from dysfunction of the cervical spine (i.e., neck).
It was then that I decided I wanted to be a chiropractor! I attended UW-O with aspirations of becoming an athletic trainer and orthopedic surgeon. I drastically changed directions and attended the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic. I am now living out my dream of being a chiropractor.
A wise mentor of mine always said, “Ignore your health and
it will go away!” Take control of your
life. Stop covering up symptoms. Address the underlying cause of your health
complaints.
Do you or does anyone you know suffer from headaches or
pain? These headaches and pain are
warning signs that indicate there is a deeper problem within your body. Instead of ignoring these warning signs and
covering them up with medication (either over-the-counter or prescription),
have the underlying causes evaluated and adjusted!
JHM Chiropractic, LLC is now accepting new patients at both
its downtown Milwaukee and Germantown chiropractic offices. Treat yourself to better health. Make an appointment today!
